Peter was in The Pit for the first Bench Minor and some of his photos are in the new COG. Lots of NYC in this issue. I noticed Peter had a new Canon Mark IV and I was very envious but not sure if more so that he had it on a [...]

I can’t say i’m good at video but here is a quick and very simple video of some Sunday pick-up in The Pit. I shot it a few weeks ago before birdseye left town.

My team and I were lucky enough to get set up with a sponsorship from Dockers for our participation in the 2010 World Hardcourt Bike Polo Championships in Berlin. We were set up with some new pants and they custom screened the winged anchor logo on some t-shirts for us. This was all despite our [...]

Bike, mallets and a ball: Bike Polo is good time
September 2nd, 2010
by: Susan Jurgelski
Six mallet-wielding cyclists square off three-on-three, ready to go wheel-to-wheel on a sun-baked city tennis court.
There’s an anticipatory tension as thick as the sultry, summer evening humidity and the hypnotic hum of cicadas.
These bicyclists are geared up.
When a red rubber ball [...]

Thanks to everyone who let me get a photo. Very laid back, just shots of anyone with a polo shirt on. I think it shows the mood of the event. Thank you Berlin!

I stopped by Brooklyn Machine Works to get a box before packing up for Berlin and seen they had a copy of the new Loop Mag. Seven full pages of bike polo and a few other small stuff spread out in the mag too. Tak has some [...]

The Ladies of NYC Bike Polo
July 21st 2010
By Emily Anne Epstein
What do you get when women, homemade mallets, beat-up bicycles and a ball collide? Bike polo, of course!
Closer to street hockey than pony polo, the game is played three-on-three until one team nets five goals. The hardcourt sport has been growing in popularity since [...]

Really glad someone is stepping up to ref a game. Can’t wait to see this in action. Additionally, teams larger than 3 is way cool.

‘One example of interference is when your teammate has the ball and you are trying to keep the other team from getting to them. Moving picks are interference as well” this is from your google rule book. I have a hard time acceptign this rule.
riding in a parralel line to an opponent and positioning yourself so that the other team can not reach your guy with the ball is a very good picking move and i honestly dont see why you call that interfernce.
could you please expain you reasoning for this rule… thank you and thanks for pointing out how kremin and i executed it perfectly on you as well as hero squad did this move to you guys that whole game.

because this is based off of hockey and it is interference in hockey.

Menace might be the only person i’ve ever heard complaining about moving picks. Up to now, i’ve considered players who are moving picks as legitimate targets for off ball body checks. I suppose if moving picks were infractions with penalties, then i wouldn’t have to lay my shoulder into them. It’ll be interesting to see this in action.

Normally and in general I really don’t care about what any of you say about anything, but since this tournament has my name and stupid face on it, I’m going to take a minute to respond quickly to Jake’s comment/concern. I want to say first that I feel discussing the reason this rule exists would be very much like discussing the existence of ‘God’ with a deeply committed Christian (not that I am in any way accusing you of this, just drawing a parallel), because if you don’t see intuitively why it’s one of the most bush-league possible ’strategies’, I feel that I stand no chance of convincing you. So, rather than travel that hopeless path, I will simply say that the rule is there because we want to see your team score goals using your stickhandling, passing, and shooting skills, not your well-practiced ability to get in someone’s way and clear a path to the net for your teammate.
Start working on those one-timers.
xoxo,
Menace

I have no problem with trying new things with hardcourt…but I don’t follow hockey, don’t give a flying shit about hockey, and if I wanted to play hockey I’d play hockey.

*Edit- Let me clarify, since I didn’t mean to come off all negative and shit. I love the team idea and having timed games with no kill score. I also agree with a lot of the rules for conduct during gameplay…I just don’t know how much I like the idea of having a penalty box at polo matches. I know it’s an experiment and I applaud the initiative, but I’m uneasy with bike polo becoming just bike hockey, since as I stated before, I could care less about hockey (and yes I am aware of the similarities as far as court size and speed are concerned).

well then, i suggest you host a tournament and then you can make up your own rules.
just sayin’

I agree, I get a little impassioned with this stuff, but with my criticism I am supporting his experiment as a concept of reworking our competitive structure. You know how much arguing can happen over the introduction of just one “rule” in hardcourt…a whole new way of playing isn’t going to be accepted wholesale, and I think Adam knows that.

adam. now i see why you totally checked me that day that i blocked your line to the ball…thank you for putting in the rules of your game.
jake and kev…it is his tournament and his rules…but i agree with you in the long run about moving picks.
is there a potential date set for this?
i am really excited to see this in action.
very cool guys.

To give a slight clue at to when this will happen, because the flier is so slow coming…
I’m fairly certain this will be after Daylight Saving Time. After March 14th.
